This section details the restoration of the Canair 506 window wiper mechanism
June 6, 2004.  I also decided to find a new window wiper.  This is not the normal window wiper but what the parts guy calls a "winter" wiper.  I have never seen one before in my life.  They are not too common in Houston either.  I finally went to O'Reilly Auto Parts and the counter guy looks at it and says he has never sold one but he recalls seeing two upstairs "once".   I asked him to look and unbelievably, the two he had were the correct size.  I purchased them both.  I think they were the only ones in Houston. Odd looking things.
I took the wiper mechanism apart and the motor shaft and the wiper shaft were frozen.  I was able to get the wiper shaft to turn stiffly after working on it for a little while. I put it in WD-40 to soak for the night to see if I can get it to loosen up some.  The motor shaft will need to be pressed out.  I will see if Mike can do it tomorrow.  Not sure it is worth it but I have not found a similar system on the internet.  This was apparently a high end wiper system and the current replacement (not quite the same mounting) is over $400.  Ouch!
June 8, 2004.  I just could not get the motor shaft off so I took it over to Mike Bice's place and just mentioned the problem and left.  Mike just could not stand leaving it alone and he had it apart in an hour, cleaned up the shaft on the lathe and had it ready to reassemble.  It still needs a new bearing.
I have received emails from folks all over the world (literally) offering tips on where to find a replacement motor.  It is great to have so much help on problems like this as the options are limited.  This one needs to be fixed and it is no longer available.
Jim Kiskis in Canada found a motor in a Canadian auto parts store.  I will order it just to be on the safe side.  Now I need to work on the wiper blade shaft to get it loose enough to work and the mechanism may work again!!!!!  It is amazing how much time a little item like this can eat up.
July 18, 2004.  Here are some pictures of the refurbished wiper mechanism.  It took a great deal of work to get it fixed up.  It turns out that the motor bearing is the same size as those used on the roller blade skates.  This is the original motor - hard to believe.  Mike Bice did a great job getting the thing apart and painting it so it looked reputable again.
I installed the unit back in the hovercraft and it works great!
Here is a picture of the bearings I used.  I only needed one but they are sold sixteen to a package....
